Bir süre önce, master yapmak için, Viyana’ya taşındım; ancak bu Viyana’dan daha ilk yazım. Bu durumun tek sorumlusu ise bitmek bilmeyen bazı evrak işleri ve şehri keşif turları :).

Babette’s, yemek pişirmeyi sevenler için tam bir cennet. Her mutfağa, her yemek çeşidine ve her zevke uygun binlerce kitapla dolu bir dükkan hayal edebilirseniz, işte orası Babette’s! Kitapların büyük bölümü Almanca elbette, fakat zaman zaman İngilizce kitaplar da bulmak mümkün. Aslında bu durumun pek de sorun olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Yemek kitapları dil öğrenmenin iyi bir yolu olabilir. :)

Yemek kitaplarının yanı sıra, geniş bir baharat koleksiyonları da var. Her zevk için bir çok karışım bulmak mümkün. Evet, çok güzel fakat ben ‘akşamki et için bir baharat alalım’ değil de ‘evde kuru kekik, biber ve defne yaprağı kalmadı’ düşüncesinde alışveriş yapıyorum. Bu durum belki Türk olmaktan kaynaklıdır. Biz daha çok baharatların tek tek tadlarını öğrenerek, dolayısıyla onları nasıl kullanırsak neye güzel tat vereceğini istemsizce öğrenerek büyüyoruz. Bunun yanı sıra ABD gibi ‘mutfağı’ olmayan ülkeler, daha çok baharat karışımlarını tercih ediyor. Sebebin, tüketim ekonomisi olmaları ve/veya herşeyi gereğinden fazla kolaylaştırıyor olmaları olabilir. Sıradan market raflarındaki herşey o kadar cezbedici ki, bir süre sonra ‘neden hazırını alıp zaman kazanmıyorum?’ diye sormaktan alamayabilir insan kendini. Elbette bu benim gibi yemek pişirmeyi ve iyi yemek yemeyi sevenler için değil, karın doyurmak için yemek yiyenler için geçerli.

Bu uzun analizin ardından konuya dönecek olursak, Mekan’ın bir de ufak mutfağı var. Hem yemek kursları, hem de menüdeki birkaç yemeği pişirmek için kullanıyorlar. Elbette bu, seçtiğiniz kitaplardan hangisini alacağınıza karar vermeye çalışırken bir bardak kahve içip, bir dilim kek ile midenizi şenlendirebileceğiniz anlamına geliyor. Aynı zamanda ev yapımı kurabiyeler de satıyorlar. Bir tane ikram edilecek kadar şanslıydım, ve ne kadar güzel olduklarını ancak tahmin edebilirsiniz! Sanırım içine ‘sevgi’ koyuyorlar. Sonuçta her yemeğin gizli malzemesi ‘sevgi’ değil mi? :)

“Babette’s”de fiyatlar çok uçuk değil, fakat Avrupa’da bulunduğunu da unutmamak gerek... Bazen, kitapların bir kısmında indirim olabiliyor, bunları takip etmek isteyebilirsiniz. Sahipleri çok yardımcılar ve mağazaya o kadar hakimler ki, birşey sorduğunuzda gidip raflara bakmadan yada bilgisayara göz atma ihtiyacı hissetmeden cevaplayabiliyorlar. Son olarak, İngilizce bildiklerini de eklemek isterim.

I have moved to Vienna as you may know but this is unfortunately the first Vienna post I am writing. The reason is I was discovering the city and dealing with some unnecessary paperwork. I will try to compensate in the coming weeks. :)

Babette’s is definitely a Mecca for cooking lovers. There a thousands of books. You can find something for every kitchen, every kind of food and for every taste. Most of them are in German unfortunately but they also have English ones from time to time. On the other hand, I don’t find it too inconvenient. Cookbooks may be a great way of learning another language :).

Besides cookbooks, they have a great selection of spices as well, many combinations for all purposes. It is fine but I prefer buying the spices separate and then combining the way I like or the dish asks for :). I am not a ‘let’s get a steak spice’ person but rather ‘I am out of dried oregano, mild paprika and bay leaves’. This may be because of the cultural heritage of Turks. We tend to know the individual tastes of spices well enough to know what to combine them with. Whereas most countries without a ‘cusine’, such as USA, prefer the ready mixes. It may also be a result of their consumption based economy and/or their tendency to try to make everything too easy and compact. Everything on the shelves or regular markets are so tempting than, in the end it is not strange to ask yourself ‘why am I not getting the readymade one and save time?’ This wouldn’t be a case for people like me who love cooking and good food, but for people who are cooking and eating just not to starve.

After the long analysis let’s go back to the topic. Babette’s also have a kitchen which is used both for cooking courses and preparing the small menu they offer. This means, you can have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake while trying to get which of the books you have chosen. They also sell homemade cookies, and I was lucky to be offered one! It was so great! I am sure they are adding ‘love’ in it. Isn’t love always the secret ingredient? :)

Prices are not crazy at Babette’s, but of course nothing is cheap in Europe… There are sometimes sales on certain books which you may want to follow. The owners are very helpful and know there every centimeter of their shop so well that, when you ask for something, instead of checking the shelves or looking at the computer, they immediately answer. As a last note, I would like add that, they do speak English.
