Ice Coffee

Afiyet olsun!
It is over 40 degrees Celsius in Ankara nowadays. While it is getting harder to breathe even at our ground floor apartment, I can hardly move a finger. Therefore, for energy boost to be able write a few posts, I decided to have a cup of coffee. While the milk was warming, it didn’t start seem such a great idea and I decided to have ice coffee in order to fulfill the need for caffeine.
It is not a big deal to prepare a glass of ice coffee. I added a few cubes of ice to the regular milk with coffee (it is not coffee with milk as I do not use water). Then I sprinkled some cacao and there you are. It cost at least 5 liras less than the Starbucks version. But what is even better is, I can enjoy my ice coffee still avoiding to go out at such a hot weather while writing this post.
Ingredients:
250 ml. milk
1 tea spoon granulated coffee ( I prefer gold )
Brown sugar
10-15 ice cubes
I warmed (not boiled) the milk and removed the clotted cream. Then I poured the milk into a jar to be able to add the ice cubes in it later on. I added the coffee and sugar and stirred until the coffee particles are not visible. Finally, I put the ice cubes, closed the lid and shake it until it is cold. I transferred my ice coffee to a glass with the foam and sprinkled some cacao to finish.
I started feeling a lot better towards the end of my glass. I hope you will cool down a little too. Enjoy!

Panmisto
Kentpark AVM
Eskişehir Yolu 7. Km
Kat/Floor : -1

For the last few months I have been going to the place with mom to get bread and some of their delicious breadsticks that are rich in grains. We liked the debonair, helpful and patient lady who owns the place. However, a few weeks ago, I discovered that the other partner was someone who I know a little more closely. First, I thought it was a coincidence when I saw my professor from Bilkent University Mr. Yiğit there. Shortly after, I discovered that the place was his, and the lady was his dear wife. He tried to trick me with their unbelievably delicious mini coffee crème brûlée, which was very hard to stop after the first spoon, but I was strong willed enough not to have any dessert and promised him to come some other day for lunch. For that day, I saved a few hundred calories.
The delicious crème brûlée was so much in my mind that I couldn’t resist long and next day, I went there with my family and he was smiling with victory. Joking, he welcomed us very nicely and tried to help us to choose, although it is almost impossible as everything on the menu are mouthwatering. Finally I ended up with quesadilla and tea, my grandma with toast and mom with a cup of Turkish coffee. Our guests from Lebanon preferred lemonade. The plates were huge, very delicious and more than what we expected. Tea was like it is at home, lemonades fresh, all the ingredients fresh and good quality. In addition, you would question weather if the chips were fried or not, so tasty and not oily at all.
Of course we were jealous of the open buffet. They had so many delicious things on the table that staying sane was very hard. What is more, with unlimited tea, it is only 10 TL! (Did I mention that at Filistin Street a cup of tea is 4.5TL?)The bakery is also innovative. Different bread choices, cakes and other arty products are worth trying. With the half open kitchen, you can see your food & beverages being prepared and of course under what conditions.
I find the prices quite convenient; everything I tried was very delicious and healthier by comparison. If you are missing the real tastes of western desserts or want your kid to eat food, not junk, I believe Panmisto is a joyful and delicious alternative for today’s’ mall-lovers.

To me, being at Maiden’s Tower is no different than being in a fairy tale. I climbed up the stairs to the magnificent view of İstanbul. My hair flutters with the warm summer breeze; I hardly catch my skirt and start dreaming at the balcony...
It may be because of the legend; The Byzantine Emperor had a baby girl. She was well educated, and her father wanted her for his throne. However, an oracle told the emperor that his daughter will be bitten by a snake and die before she takes over the throne. To protect her daughter, the emperor ordered for the construction of the tower that is in the middle of the sea, where snakes cannot reach. However, one day, a snake came out of a grape basket and bit the princess, causing her death.
At this magical place, we decided to have our lunch. I have heard many times that the restaurant downstairs was magnificent. We ordered and started chatting about the tower, its history, legends and the beautiful scenery. After while we realized that it has been about 25 minutes since we have ordered 2 pasta dishes, a chicken steak dish and a sandwich. We asked for them, and after ten more minutes our food arrived. For some reason they were cold, incredibly oily and very tasteless. The lunch woke me up from my dream of being a princess there and I realized that my expectations for a fancy plate were not going to be met.
No matter what, if you go to İstanbul, never skip visiting Maiden’s Tower, the view and imagining how it was hundreds of years ago is good enough. By the way, to get there, you can take the boats leaving right next to Kabataş İDO Pier.

Do I really need a fancy introduction? The name tells everything on its own, the neighbour bakery. In short, at today’s world, where everyone is in a hurry and wishing to eat well at the same time, Komşu Fırın helps you to survive.
It has healthy choices you can grab and go, which include sandwiches with brown bread, cookies, simit and other bakery products. No matter what you buy, you can be sure that it is a low-calorie alternative. In addition, they have tables outside, so you can enjoy the warm tea or the delicious homemade lemonade with your breakfast choice. I tried their simit which is rich in grains and also their brown bread sandwiches with lemonade. I didn’t want them to finish!
Personnel at Mecidiyeköy branch were a little inexperienced. However, the most important thing is that they were doing their best for sure. As a result, them being slow, therefore people lining for their orders, were not unhappy.
I must add that if you are looking for a healthy breakfast or lunch try the closest Komşu Fırın for once. By the way, don’t forget that you can get delicious breads too.

Walking around İstanbul 1: Wagamama – Kanyon, Levent
Evet, geçen hafta İstanbul’daydım. Doğal olarak bundan sonraki birkaç yazım İstanbul hakkında olacak. Hoşunuza gideceğini düşünüyorum.

Yes, I was in İstanbul last week. The next few posts will be about İstanbul, as a result. I hope you will like them...
First evening, we went to Wagamama at Kanyon Shopping Mall ground floor, with my grandmother . I love the place since I had my first “ramen” at their London branch. The decoration originally consists of long tables and long benches where everyone can sit next to each other as a big family. Due to the nature of the place, everyone comes, has a quick meal and than continues their day. Also, Wagamama was a cheap alternative in London. However, in Turkey, as in all other international food&beverage places, the concept is totally different. The comperatively high prices, turned the neighbourhood’s fast and healthy belly filling station to a fancy restaurant with seperate tables, longer eating time and people gossiping meanly about what others are wearing, looking like or wheather if they are eligible to dine there.
No matter what, we were there, as I love their food and it is perfect for even my grandmother, who is very sensitive to most of the ingredients. We ordered boiled edamme to start with (fresh and crispy soy beans, unshelled). Shortly after, my “yaki soba” – noodles with chicken and vegetables and grandma’s “chicken ramen” – big bowl of noodles, chicken and some vegetables served like a soup- arrived. She liked it very much as it is plain, all boiled, and had a portion that is more than enough. I loved mine too, almost no oil, lots of vegetables and you don’t feel heavy afterwards.
As I already mentioned the atmosphere, I have a little to add. Waiters were very friendly and welcoming. They showed great respect to my grandmother and also helped a lot to choose what to eat, considering the ingredients that she cannot eat. As it is so at all Wagamama’s, service was incredibly fast. There is a terrace area option, which was very crowded due hot weather.
Getting there is also very easy. There is a large parking lot for the ones who still prefer driving at İstanbul’s crazy traffic. For the less patient ones, there is the subway option. You can take M2 line and hop off at Levent station. You can directly go in Kanyon, from subway.
If you are interested in far east cusines but you find them sometimes too spicy, fried or oily, Japanese style food serving Wagamama is a very good choice for you. In their words, “positive eating + positive living”. Worth trying, you won’t regret it!
